When traveling to another country or even throughout your own, it’s essential to have the right kind of insurance to protect you against unforeseen accidents and injuries. Accidents can happen while you’re abroad, and an insurance policy can help ensure that this accident doesn’t cause you additional undue financial stress at the end of the day. Getting the right kind of insurance policy to protect you is essential for making your next trip a worry-free adventure.

Visitor insurance is a type of insurance policy that covers injuries, accidents, or illnesses that may occur while you are traveling internationally. Finding and receiving medical care while abroad can be daunting but having the right insurance policy makes it easier to understand where to go for help.

Visitor Insurance

Most visitor insurance policies are available as fixed or limited coverage plans or as comprehensive plans. Visitor insurance is different from travel insurance and generally explicitly covers medical situations that may come up while you are on a trip outside of your home country.

You can buy Visitor Insurance here or read more about it below. Here is more information on what visitor insurance is and how it could benefit you on your next trip out of the country.

What is Visitor Insurance?

Visitor Insurance is a medical insurance policy designed to cover international travelers on a short-term basis. This type of insurance can be used by people who are traveling to a country where their domestic medical insurance may not cover them in case of an injury or unexpected medical problem. Visitor insurance is often used for people visiting another country temporarily, waiting for employment in another country, or when their national health insurance may not cover them while they are traveling abroad in certain nations.

Visitor insurance is not a substitute for domestic health insurance, nor is it in the same category as comprehensive travel insurance. When you travel, visitor insurance is supposed to cover unforeseen injuries, accidents, or illnesses that occur while the policy is active. Visitor insurance can be bundled with other travel-related insurance policies, but in and of itself specifically covers medical emergencies.

Visitor Insurance vs. Travel Insurance

Visitor insurance is commonly known as travel medical insurance. Travel insurance policies can cover medical emergencies while abroad, but also includes protection for cancellations, travel interruptions, emergency evacuations, assistance while traveling, and other travel-related mishaps that may occur.

Visitor insurance is specifically focused on medical emergencies and health issues that may require the care of a doctor or prescription purchases while outside of your home country.

Fixed or Limited Coverage Policies

Fixed or limited visitor insurance policies offer limited coverage for medical issues that may occur while you travel. There is an amount of money that is predetermined in the policy that will cover doctor visits, emergency room care, and other medical situations that may arise. Specific services have costs associated with them, which is the cost that the policy will cover. Any additional amount left over is to be paid by the policyholder.

Limited visitor insurance coverage is the less expensive option. Policyholders can visit any doctor or medical facility, although some may be considered in the network. Again, only a specified dollar amount per visit is covered by the insurance policy after the deductible has been reached.

Fixed coverage plans offer limited protection and may not be adequate to meet your medical needs while abroad. Coverage is limited to the pre-defined situations laid out in the insurance policy that is based on a fixed amount of charges. As with any insurance policy, be sure to read the fine print and policy details to know what your financial responsibilities are if you need to use your insurance coverage while abroad. Understand the benefits and coverage details of the fixed or limited coverage visitor insurance policy you choose before you travel.

Comprehensive Coverage Policies

A comprehensive visitor insurance policy offers more protection than a fixed/limited policy does. However, this comes with a higher price tag, as these types of policies are more expensive than their limited counterparts.

A comprehensive visitor insurance policy can work like a PPO or Preferred Provider Network. This means that there are certain doctors and medical facilities that have previously agreed to take that kind of visitor travel insurance. With this kind of plan, the policyholder will pay a one-time deductible. After that, they may be responsible for up to 20% of the cost of the first $5,000 of medical care they receive. Insurance will be in charge of 80% of the first $5,000. After that point, the insurance would typically cover 100%. In the above example, the insured party would be responsible for paying $1,000 out of pocket for that medical care.

Comprehensive coverage may be more expensive, but it can offer better and more flexible protection than a fixed or limited plan might. There are more protections built into a comprehensive policy, which may appeal to travelers who have a higher risk of requiring medical care while abroad.

The benefits of a comprehensive policy will be based on the type of plan chosen, as well as the company that offers that comprehensive plan. There may be additional co-insurance payments required as well.

How Visitor Insurance Works

Visitor Insurance allows policyholders and those they travel with (if they are included in the policy) to obtain medical care for accidents, injuries, or illnesses while they travel abroad. Policyholders can visit any doctor or medical center, although their policy may detail a PPO or Preferred Provider Network. This network means that you don’t need to obtain a referral from your primary doctor to make an appointment.

With visitor insurance, both comprehensive and limited, a PPO would be more likely to accept a policyholder as a patient and offer better financing rates. Not all doctors or medical centers will be PPOs, so be sure to check your policy to see what the providers are in your area before you travel. The financial responsibility for medical care may be different between a PPO and a non-PPO, which will be listed in the details of the policy. Out of pocket expenses will differ based on the policy you choose and whether you visit a provider within your network or not.

Visitor insurance can be bundled with other travel-related insurance policies. There may be additional protection for hospitalization, surgery, or emergency evacuations. These add-ons may increase what your policy can cover to meet your needs better when you travel.
