What Is the History of Tokio Marine HCC?

Tokio Marine HCC was formed in 2015 when Tokio Marine acquired Houston Casualty Company (HCC). Now, one of the largest insurance providers in the world, Tokio Marine HCC has a fascinating history that began in two separate centuries for two different purposes.

Tokio Marine was formed in 1879 as Japan’s first-ever insurance enterprise. The timing of the company’s birth is no coincidence. At the time, Japan was pushing for fresh enterprising ideas to help build the economy.  Japan’s maritime industry began to boom, but with the increase in business came an increase in risk. Tokio Marine was developed to provide insurance to the growing maritime industry and help mitigate damages that life and work at sea can bring.

Throughout the following years, the maritime industry saw devastation and rebirth. Between earthquakes, wars, and crime sprees, Japan’s maritime industry, and as a result, Tokio Marine, was forced to rebuild and reinvent itself. In 1977, Tokio Marine drafted its very first three-year market business plan. The plan involved an expansion of products, including personal lines of insurance as well as commercial lines.

During this time of Tokio Marine’s rebirth, in 1974, HCC was established by Stephen L. Way across the world in Houston, Texas. The sole purpose of HCC was to offer aviation insurance to the many airlines that were then taking to the skies. Throughout the years, HCC grew and became well known as a travel and aviation insurance provider in the United States.

From 1991 through 1995, the world seemed to be rife with natural disasters. The resulting effect was the increase of a need for property and casualty insurance. To continue its relevancy and expansion, Tokio Marine began to build its property and casualty lines and offer insurance options to those struck by such disasters. Then, in 1996, Japan deregulated insurance, which allowed life insurance and other types of insurance carriers to enter each other’s marketplace.

As a result of the available growth opportunities, Tokio Marine had nowhere to go but up. In 2008, up meant out, and Tokio Marine began to expand coverage to parts of the world outside of Japan. This expansion continued through 2015, when it merged with HCC, and continues today as the company continues to grow and acquire insurance offerings throughout the world.

What Are the Driving Principles Behind Tokio Marine HCC?

Tokio Marine HCC has one driving philosophy above all else: “Mind Over Risk.” As catchy as that sounds, there is a real drive and business sense behind this phrase. Mind over risk means that the business uses human ability to sympathize, empathize, and evaluate the risk of clients’ insurance needs. As a result of this philosophy, Tokio Marine HCC is known to be among the best at assessing risks for insurance clients and developing policies accordingly.

Many insurance companies ignore the human element of business and insurance coverage. However, due to Tokio Marine HCC’s driving principles, the human element is the most critical piece to the insurance equation for the company, always placing it above the rest in customer satisfaction.

According to the website, Tokio Marine HCC has one overall vision: “to be a good company.” This vision sounds vague, however, as you look through their vision statement, there are many layers to what is considered a “good company” by Tokio Marine HCC.

First, integrity is vital within the company. This concept means the company will never consider profit as the driving force behind its business decisions. Instead, the company will always act in the best interests of its clients, employees, and society before worrying about the bottom line. This philosophy has kept Tokio Marine in business for over 140 years.

Second, the company is employee based. The company looks to inspire their employees to be better than they were yesterday. They invest in their employees to build confidence and, in return, loyalty to the company’s vision and principles.

Finally, the company believes in following through on promises and “making good on their commitments.” This promise means that they never promise something they cannot or would not deliver. If they make a statement or promise, they follow through, at almost all costs, to make sure they keep their word and take responsibility for their commitments.

How Does Tokio Marine HCC Honor Its Vision and Philosophy?

One of the best ways Tokio Marine HCC lives up to is vision and philosophy is to give back to the community. The company does this in many ways throughout all of its offices. Some of the community projects Tokio Marine HCC offices have supported include:
