single trip travel insurance

If you bought a new car, you wouldn’t accept an auto insurance policy that wasn’t tailored to your needs, would you? If you plan to have a baby next year, you wouldn’t take out insurance that doesn’t cover visits to the pediatrician, right? Then why would you pay for the first travel insurance policy that’s offered to you without comparing it to others that may offer better benefits at a more affordable price?

Comparison sites like can help find the best policy for you whether you’re taking a road trip across America or flying to visit relatives in Europe. They can make sure you’re covered while you’re strolling down the alleys of Amsterdam or scaling the heights of the Himalayas. They can cover everything from lost luggage to perilous pandemics.

Not All Policies Are Created Equal

If you’re new to buying travel insurance, you might think that all policies are basically the same. Perhaps you know someone who had to cancel their cruise and had a travel insurance policy that covered the entire cost of their trip. Or you may have heard about a friend of a friend who had an accident while riding a Vespa on the streets of Rome and didn’t have to pay a dime in medical bills. These are great anecdotes and they certainly show that having a travel insurance policy can save the day. However, there are plenty of other stories where travelers thought they were covered for the unfortunate circumstances in which they found themselves and weren’t.

Anyone who learned the hard way that travel insurance isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution probably wishes they had done their homework before purchasing a policy. Carmen Balber, the executive director of the not-for-profit organization Consumer Watchdog, explains that there is no such thing as a “standard policy.” She emphasizes the importance of reading the fine print rather than making assumptions about what is covered.

Some things that are not covered by travel insurance policies include drug or alcohol related incidents, illegal activities or risky behavior, or flights that you missed because you simply woke up late and showed up at the gate after boarding was completed.

Easy As 1, 2, 3

The Learning Center at offers informative articles that will help you learn more about buying travel insurance. You’ll find answers to frequently asked questions, a glossary of commonly used terms, and posts with detailed descriptions of the different kinds of policies.

For those of you who want the Cliff’s Notes version, here are the most important things to know about comparing policies and providers:

1. Most insurers offer a comprehensive plan that covers things like trip cancellation, interruptions or delays, medical care in case of emergencies, and lost or stolen luggage. For coverage specific to your situation, you’ll want to check out add-ons like coverage for extreme sports, named perils*, or pre-existing medical conditions. If you really want to cover all your bases, combine these add-ons with a CFAR (cancel for any reason) policy rather than one of the standard plans.

*Named perils are specific conditions listed in your policy for which coverage is included when damages and losses occur as a result of those conditions. Before COVID-19 came along, many travel insurance policies didn’t offer coverage for pandemics. In other words, pandemics were not a named peril. Thankfully, that has changed and can help you find a company that covers you if the pandemic affects your travel plans.

2. You might already have coverage for trip interruptions or delays if you paid for your trip with your credit card. Your renter’s or homeowner’s insurance might replace your belongings if your suitcase goes missing. You might have some basic protections rolled into the price of your tour. But this coverage is usually very limited. Be sure you know the limits and get an insurance policy that will cover all of your needs, not just replace your luggage or help you re-book your flight. Take into consideration what is already covered and find a policy that fills the gaps or offers you additional coverage on top of that which is offered by your credit card company, your renter’s or homeowner’s policy, or the company with which you booked your trip.

3. The cost of a typical comprehensive travel insurance plan will be about 4-8% of the total cost of your trip. The price depends on your destination, the length and cost of the trip, your age, and which supplemental coverage you need. If you’re planning to spend a weekend in the Poconos relaxing in front of a fireplace, travel insurance might not be a major concern. But if you’re taking that bucket-list trip to Bali, isn’t the minimal added expense worth it? As with any insurance policy, you have to weigh the cost of protection against the possibility of financial loss in case something happens.

Insurance Doesn’t Have to Be Intimidating

If even the Cliff’s Notes version seems intimidating, don’t worry! Comparison sites like make it easy to compare prices and benefits. Simply enter the dates of your trip and your primary destination, the total cost, the number and age of travelers in your party, and your residency and citizenship information and you’ll receive quotes from some of the most reliable insurance companies in the business.

Once you receive the quotes, you’ll be able to choose the one that best fits your circumstances and purchase the policy online for immediate coverage. You’ll receive a copy of your policy and any other necessary documentation in your inbox within minutes. Best of all, prices are regulated by each state, which means you won’t find a lower price anywhere else for a plan found on

Pick a Perk

If all the quotes cover your basic needs and are roughly the same price, dig a little deeper and find out which ones have added perks such as concierge services. You’ll really feel like you got your money’s worth when you can call someone to help you locate the nearest doctor or pharmacy, rebook your flight, recommend a local restaurant, or schedule a tee time at a nearby golf course. Wouldn’t you rather spend your time relaxing by the pool than holding a phone to your ear? Let a concierge make reservations, offer recommendations, and handle re-bookings with this advantageous add-on.

Other plans might include helpful benefits like legal assistance, translation or interpretation services, protection against identity theft, or even reimbursement for kennel fees if you have to pick up your pet late due to a flight delay.

Some companies offer free coverage for children traveling with their parents or grandparents, while others offer bankruptcy protection or waivers for pre-existing conditions at no additional cost if you purchase travel insurance soon after booking your trip.

Another perk offered by many top-rated insurers is 24-hour assistance. When you need help, it shouldn’t matter which time zone you’re in. Emergencies don’t always happen during typical business hours. A policy with this benefit gives it an edge over other policies with similar coverage.

We’ve Got You Covered

You’ll save time and money and maybe even get a few extras when you use to purchase a travel insurance policy that covers your next vacation or business trip. Make comparing travel insurance a standard part of your booking process and you’ll benefit from the peace of mind that comes from planning ahead. You’ll be happy you took the time to do your research when the insurance company says those magic words: “Don’t worry, your policy covers that.”
