When planning a trip, it is important to consider trip insurance as financial protection against unforeseen situations. While major emergency situations tend to happen infrequently for most travelers, contracting influenza is more common. The chance of developing an illness is more likely when someone is exposed to viruses during their travels. Here are some ways to avoid getting influenza while traveling.

Influenza Tip 1: Get an Influenza Inoculation

An individual should make sure to schedule an influenza inoculation (aka flu shot) in the fall each year to make sure that they have resistance to this illness. It can take several weeks for the human body to develop the proper antibodies that prevent influenza. This will also give an individual a chance to overcome some of the side effects of body aches and nausea that may occur after an influenza inoculation.

Influenza Tip 2: An Individual Should Wash Their Hands

While traveling, an individual should wash their hands as much as possible to get rid of the pathogens that collect when touching doorknobs and other surfaces. When someone washes their hands, they should make sure to scrub all of the way up to the wrists and between fingers. They should use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the door of a bathroom when finished.

Influenza Tip 3: Remain Hydrated While Traveling

If an individual is hydrated, then mucus membranes in their throat and nose are less likely to absorb the pathogens that lead to an illness. Drink as much water as possible before and during travels. Citrus juices can also help to keep the body hydrated, but generally contain large amounts of sugar.

Influenza Tip 4: Clean Surfaces In a Hotel Room

Travelers often think that their hotel rooms are sanitized, but scientists who have studied the surfaces in hotel rooms know that this isn’t true. While the sheets on a hotel’s bed are often changed, the blankets, decorative pillows and bedspreads are infrequently washed between guests. In addition, the bathroom’s faucet handles, counter tops and fixtures might not have been sanitized with bleach to eliminate dangerous pathogens.

Influenza Tip 5: Bring Along Hand Sanitizer Products

Bring along hand sanitizer products that contain rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. When someone can’t wash their hands, using these products is the next best choice. An individual can also have antiseptic wipes to carry in their pocket while visiting public venues such as zoos, museums and sporting events. Despite all of these precautions, travelers should also have travel insurance to pay for emergency medical bills during a trip or to be reimbursed their at-risk trip costs if they have to cancel or interrupt their trip for an unforeseen sickness.
