Most airports and other crowded public areas have security systems in place. However, taking your own measures increases your chances of staying safe and healthy while on the go. Adhere to the following tips to make public spaces safer for yourself and those around you.
Never leave items unattended
Even when you’re stopping briefly to look at items in a shop or to wash your hands, your belongings should be with you at all times. When you leave items unattended, you risk having something stolen or having someone place an unknown item in one of your bags. If you encounter an unattended bag, report it to security right away.
Don’t carry large amounts of cash
It’s always a good idea to have a small amount of cash with you in case of an emergency. Whenever possible, keep your cash, wallet, or purse in a front pocket, out of sight. If cash or an item containing cash is visible or situated right near the top of a bag, it’s more likely someone will take it out of your bag without you noticing.
Carry and use hand sanitizer
From security bins at the airport to hand rails in malls, there are numerous items in public places that hundreds, if not thousands, of people touch each day. Use hand sanitizer before eating, and wipe down any items that go through security checks or touch potentially germ filled surfaces, such as bathroom sinks.
Never take rides from strangers
People who are authorized to give rides will display clear authorization, such as a marked vehicle or ID badge. Be wary of anyone offering a ride who doesn’t appear to be with an official organization. If you need transportation to or from a public place and haven’t made arrangements ahead of time, visit an information desk or other reputable source for details about available cabs, car services, and public transportation.
Finally, whether you’re taking a short weekend trip two hours away or you’re traveling halfway across the country, it’s always a good idea to purchase travel insurance. You never know what will happen when you’re traveling. Having extra trip protection ensures safe travels with no major unexpected expenses.
