The modern world offers many opportunities for exciting and rewarding resort trips for couples and families. Many new travel destinations have become more accessible, as have options for traveling to these destinations. Unfortunately, the costs and planning involved in traveling can make plans riskier than ever. The necessity for travelers to consider trip insurance because of these risks has become more important than ever.
The most important aspect of travel insurance is knowledge of what the policy covers. Some policies can include trip cancellation and travel delay refunds. Some offer 24-hour hot lines providing travelers with informational services such as where to find foreign medical resources, arranging for emergency cash transfers, foreign and domestic travel advisories and other information.
Emergency Medical Expenses
While most insurance benefits focus on the trip, others focus on emergency situations resulting in unexpected expenses. Resort trips are fun and exciting to plan but it is unwise to forget that serious mishaps or medical emergencies are possible and can happen without notice. Travel insurance plans offer increasing levels of medical care and coverage for other potential medical expenses based on the rates and the coverage selected.
Taking a percentage of the total trip cost and combining it with the vacationers’ age and trip length generally determine travel insurance rates. Some companies offering travel insurance have rates as low as four percent of the total trip cost; however, if the traveler chooses a higher rate, more coverage is included such as baggage loss compensation and travel delay expenses. As with any insurance policy, rates usually increase with age because of the higher risk for accidents and medical needs. Most policies offer coverage for the first 30 days of travel with higher charges for longer vacations.
Other Expenses
Although terrorism is an unpleasant prospect, it is a travel reality and covered by many travel insurers. Other services such as concierge for dinner reservations and other help that simply makes traveling easier can also be covered. This is in addition to 24-hour live travel assistance services and ordinary concierge services to help with re-booking flights, making extra travel arrangements, and recovering or reissuing lost credit cards.
It makes no sense to embark upon an extensive and well-planned resort trip and leave out these considerations. While the additional cost may seem high, the potential cost of facing unforeseen circumstances is far higher. Travel insurance costs are moderate when compared to the total cost of an extensive vacation and is a responsible investment for many.
